About MamaGirl:

A native of the Eastern Shore, MamaGirl (born Mary Onley) presents self-taught artwork that is stylized, bold and confident.  She shares a repertoire of motifs to tell dream-like, visual stories.  Her subject matter is often figures or animals; images within a flattened space. Her bright colors and simplified shapes give her work a rawness that is commonly found in self-taught or outsider art.   MamaGirl’s work is playful to the eye in almost a child-like style, complete with her signature watermelon trees.

Her work is the result of what she calls “inspirations from the spirit”.  Like the march on Washington, MamaGirl views the upcoming lecture and community workshop as a way to bring all people together and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin L. King.  She is concerned with “everyone coming together - - and bringing people together”.  Art allows this.  “When they were marching it was a group - - - black, white, pink or pokadot.. it was a mix of people marching - - - this event is about bringing all people together - - we can come together.”

Techniques using recycled newspaper, very small amounts of glue and classroom paint along with meaningful themes make for a perfect studio workshop for local art teachers and pre-service art education students in the art program at Old Dominion University.

MamaGirl has led various workshops including sessions in  Maryland, Richmond, VA  and at Hampton University in Hampton, VA.
